Lesson 1     The Apostles Heal Many

This lesson is taken from Acts 5:12-16

The apostles performed many miracles and wonders among the people. And all of the believers of the Lord were meeting regularly at the Temple in the area that was known as Solomon’s Porch.  But, no one outside their group dared to join them, even though all the people thought highly of them.  Yet more and more people begin to believe and were brought to the Lord.  There were crowds of both men and women that came to hear them teach.  As a result of the apostles’ work, sick people were brought out into the streets on beds and mats.  It was hoped that Peter’s shadow would fall across them as he walked by them and they would be healed.   Crowds came from the villages that was around Jerusalem, they would bring their sick and those troubled by evil spirits, and they were all healed.

Lesson 2  The Apostles are Arrested
This lesson is taken from Acts 5:17-26

The high priest and his friends, who were Sadducees, and who was with the high priest became very jealous.  They arrested the apostles and put them in the city’s jail.   But an angel of the Lord came that night, and the angel opened the gates of the jail, and let them out.  Then the angel told the apostles, “Go to the Temple and tell the people about this new life!”   So at daybreak the apostles entered the Temple, as they were told, and immediately began teaching.
When the high priest and his friends arrived, they called for a meeting with the high council along with all of the teachers of Israel. Then they ordered the apostles to be brought from the jail for trial.  But when the Temple guards went to the jail, the apostles were gone. So they returned to the council and said, “The jail was tightly locked up, and there were guards standing outside, but when we opened the doors and went in no one was there!”
When the captain of the Temple guard and the leading priests heard this story, they found it hard to understand, but they did not know what to think about it.  Then someone came in with surprising news: “The men you put in jail are standing in the Temple, teaching the people!”  The captain of the temple police went with his guards and arrested the apostles, but without violence, for they were afraid the people would throw stones at them, if the apostles were hurt.

Lesson 3    The Apostles Before the High Council
This lesson is taken from Acts 5:27-42

The temple guards brought the apostles before the high council, where the high priest asked them, “didn’t we tell you never again, to teach in this man, Jesus, name?”  “And look, you have been teaching all of the people of Jerusalem about him, and you want to blame us for his death!”   But Peter and the other apostles answered, “We must obey God, instead of people.  The God of our fathers raised up Jesus from the dead, after you had killed him by hanging him on a cross.  Then God put Jesus in the place of honor at his right hand as Prince and Savior. He did this so the people of Israel would repent of their sins and be forgiven of their sins.  We are witnesses of these things, and the Holy Spirit is a witness also to these things.  The word “witnesses” here means that they know for sure without any doubt what they are saying is the truth.  Also the apostles said that “The Holy Spirit is given by God to those who obey him.”
When the council members heard this, the high council became so angry that they wanted to kill, the apostles.  But there was one member, a Pharisee, whose name was Gamaliel ( Ga-ma-li-el), he was a teacher of religious law,  and the people thought a lot of him.  He stood up and he ordered that the apostles be taken outside the council room for a little while.  Then he said to the council, “Men of Israel, you should be careful of what you are planning to do to these men!  For some time ago there was a man who claimed to be someone important.   And about 400 men joined him, but he was killed,  all of those who followed him went their different ways.   And that was the end of it.   After him, another man whose name was Judas of Galilee rose up that was when the census was taken.   He got many people to follow him, but he was killed, too, and all of those who followed him went their different ways.   “So my advice is, stay away from these men and leave them alone.  So, let them go.  If they are planning and doing these things just on their own, it will soon come to nothing.   But if what they are doing comes from God, you will not be able to stop them. You may even find yourselves fighting against God!”
The council members agreed with what he said and took his advice. They called back in the apostles and then had them beaten with a whip.  Then they ordered them never again to speak in the name of Jesus, and then they let them go.  When the apostles left the high council they were happy that God had thought them worthy enough to suffer shame for the name of Jesus.   Every day, they went to the Temple, and to every house, and they did not quit teaching or preaching that: “Jesus is the Messiah.”
